# CTR Journey: FL5 Civic Type R Clubsport Migration Plan
*A methodical, reliability-first blueprint from SCCA B Street to B Street Touring (BST)*

---

## The Philosophy

### Prime Directive
**Seat time > lap time > horsepower.**
Every modification must be evaluated first against: does this keep the car running reliably, reduce per-event cost, or get the driver back on course faster? Modifications are not goals. They are necessary tools to achieve reliability, safety, and durability.

**Durability Benchmark:** Complete a 20-minute HPDE session at a sustained pace in Southwest Florida ambient heat, return to the paddock, and require zero cool-down laps, extended idle periods, or same-day maintenance to run again.

### The OEM++ Gatekeeper Rule
The car must never feel "unbalanced" or punishing on the street. No excessive NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness), no destructive suspension geometry changes, and no compromised daily drivability. Power is addressed *last*. The "Clubsport" flavor focuses on dynamic control, high thermal capacity, and chassis precision.

## Phase 1: Maximizing B Street (Current Baseline)
*Focus: Mastering the stock footprint, protecting hardware from Southwest Florida heat, and establishing data metrics.*

### Fluids & Thermal Baseline
* **Engine Oil:** **Honda HRC Formula R 0W-20** (Part #08236-P99-AEQAJ) or **Mobil 1 ESP 0W-20**
    * *Cost:* ~$35–$60 per oil change.
    * *Problem Solved:* Maintains 100% airtight factory powertrain warranty compliance while utilizing a high-shear European/Track-spec baseline to resist thermal thinning.
    * *Failure Mode Without It:* Standard passenger car oil shears down under track heat, leading to low oil pressure and accelerated rod bearing wear.
    * *Interval:* Every 3–4 GCAC autocross events or immediately following an HPDE track weekend.
* **Brake Fluid:** **Castrol SRF** or **Motul RBF 660**
    *   *Cost:* ~$40–$75.
    * *Problem Solved:* Extremely high wet boiling points prevent fluid vaporization under hard braking.
    * *Failure Mode Without It:* Boiled fluid creates an instantly soft, collapsing brake pedal mid-session, resulting in a dangerous off-track excursion.
    * *Hardware Check:* Confirm factory plastic front brake cooling deflectors are bolted to the lower control arms.
* **Transmission Fluid:** **Motul Gear 300 75W-90** or **Redline MT-90**
    *   *Cost:* ~$45.
    * *Problem Solved:* Maintains synchronous and gear surface protection in a tightly packed engine bay that traps massive exhaust heat.
    * *Failure Mode Without It:* High-RPM notchiness, 2nd-to-3rd gear lockout on track, and accelerated synchro wear.

### Alignment & Chassis (BS Legal)
* **The "Free" Camber Trick:** Pull the factory front suspension alignment pins.
    * *Cost:* $0 (DIY or alignment cost).
    * *Problem Solved:* Maximizes front negative camber to roughly $-1.8^\circ$ to $-2.1^\circ$ within factory limits. Saves the outer shoulders of expensive 200TW tires from the abrasive Buckingham airfield concrete.

### Wheels & Tires (BS Legal Dimensions)
*   **Wheel Setup:** Factory dimensions ($19 \times 9.5\text{"} +60\text{mm}$ offset) or legal aftermarket wheels within $\pm7\text{mm}$ offset (e.g., Apex VS-5RS or Titan 7 T-R10 in $19 \times 9.5\text{"} +60\text{mm}$).
*   **Tires:** **Nankang CR-S v2** or **Bridgestone Potenza RE-71RS** ($265/35\text{R}19$)
    *   *Cost:* ~$1,400–$1,800 per set.
    *   *Pressure Routine:*
        * *GCAC Autocross:* Start 31–32 PSI cold; bleed down immediately after run 1 to target **35–36 PSI hot**. Prevent ballooning.
        * *HPDE Track Day:* Start 28–29 PSI cold; target **35 PSI hot** after a 20-minute heat spike.
    * *Lifespan:* Expect ~4–5 full track days or ~40–50 autocross runs on abrasive concrete before outer shoulders degrade due to stock camber limits.

### Instrumentation
* **Data Logger / Display:** **OBDLink MX+** paired with **HondaLogR 2.0** or a dedicated dash display.
    *   *Cost:* ~$140.
    * *Problem Solved:* Real-time tracking of vital metrics (Oil Temp, Coolant Temp, IAT, Boost) to catch thermal ceiling spikes *before* safety limp mode triggers.

## Phase 2: The B Street Touring (BST) Clubsport Migration
*Focus: Transitioning to the ultimate dual-purpose track/street setup. Modifications execute only after the baseline limits of Phase 1 are thoroughly documented and exhausted.*

### Item 1: Dynamic Damper Control & Precision Geometry
* **Suspension Controller:** **DSC Sport V4 Calibration Module**
    *   *Cost:* ~$1,400.
    * *Problem Solved:* Replaces the static, pre-mapped factory damper ECU with an active, real-time algorithm processing live G-forces, brake pressure, and steering inputs. Keeps the ride compliant for Southwest Florida streets while instantly stiffening body roll dynamically under track load.
    * *Failure Mode Without It:* Factory +R mode can feel overly rigid, skittish, or "bouncy" on uneven, high-speed track surfaces like Sebring, upsetting chassis balance mid-corner.
* **Front Camber Joints:** **Eibach Front Adjustable Ball Joints** or **Spoon Sports Camber Joints**
    *   *Cost:* ~$350–$500.
    * *Problem Solved:* Establishes a true **$-3.0^\circ$ front negative camber** profile. Equalizes tire pyrometer temperature readings across the entire tread face, dramatically sharpening mid-corner rotation and preserving 200TW tire life.
    * *Failure Mode Without It:* Massive outer shoulder wear on wide tires, leading to high per-event running costs and degraded lateral grip.

### Item 2: The 18" Lightweight Wheel & Tire Package
* **Wheel Setup:** **Apex VS-5RS** or forged Sprint Spec variants ($18 \times 10.5\text{"}$ with specific high offsets, ~$+47\text{mm}$).
* **Tire Setup:** **295-width 200TW Extreme Performance Tires** ($295/30\text{R}18$ square setup).
    *   *Cost:* ~$3,200–$4,000 total.
    * *Problem Solved:* Drastically lowers tire replacement consumable costs by dropping from 19" to 18" inner diameters, increases sidewall compliance, and provides a massive mechanical contact patch at all four corners.
    * *OEM++ Warning:* Offset selection must be extremely precise to guarantee inner body and outer fender lip clearance without requiring destructive fender rolling.

### Item 3: Clubsport Thermal Management (Reliability Before Power)
When wider tires, aggressive camber, and track pace increase full-throttle duration, the FL5 engine bay requires increased thermal safety margins.

| Component | Recommended Engineering Solution | Approximate Cost | Target Problem / Failure Mode Avoided |
| :--- | :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Intercooler (FMIC)** | **WOT Performance / CSF High-Efficiency Intercooler** | ~$900–$1,200 | **Problem:** Rapidly climbing Charge Air Temperatures (IAT2).<br>**Failure Mode Avoided:** The factory ECU aggressively pulls ignition timing to mitigate detonation, resulting in a sudden 30+ hp drop mid-session. |
| **External Oil Cooler** | **HKS** or **Spoon Sports Dedicated Oil Cooler Kit** | ~$800–$1,100 | **Problem:** Engine oil temps climbing past $250^\circ\text{F}$ in sustained ambient heat.<br>**Failure Mode Avoided:** Drastic drops in oil pressure, leading to accelerated engine journal bearing wear or immediate thermal limp mode. |
| **Radiator Upgrade** | **Unity Performance Upgraded Aluminum Radiator** | ~$700 | **Problem:** Cooling system capacity limits under high boost.<br>**Failure Mode Avoided:** Engine coolant boils over, forcing mandatory cool-down laps and shortening valuable track seat time. |

### Item 4: Power and Mapping (Addressed Last)
* **ECU Calibration:** Conservative, endurance-focused tune via **Hondata FlashPro** or **Motec** if club racing constraints dictate.
    *   *Cost:* ~$800–$1,500.
    * *Clubsport Alignment:* Linear throttle mapping over peak torque figures. Power delivery must remain completely predictable to prevent mid-corner chassis imbalances or excessive front wheelspin.
